Bloomberg just released a report citing three unnamed sources?who name?specific details of Apple's next iPad. The iPad 3 will have a high-definition screen, 4G LTE networking and a powerful quad-core processor, says the news service. The report also says that the product will reach full production volume by February.

It's no surprise that the iPad 3 will have a better screen: The iPhone has long had the more beautiful "retina" screen, and a device like the iPad, meant for reading, should have one too. It's also no great shock that Apple would put a quad-core processor in there, especially given the positive reception of the Asus EeePad Transformer Prime. As you can see in the video below, the Prime appeals to gamers because of its quad-core processor.

What does shock me is the LTE wireless connectivity. Apple's strongest U.S. partners, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, both have LTE networks, and Sprint is rolling one out too. But Apple is often reluctant to jump on new wireless technologies, and if this report is to be believed, LTE would come to the iPad before it was even on the iPhone.

As for the February date, that sounds consistent with last year's shipping schedule: The company announced the iPad 2 on March 2, and had it in U.S. stores by March 10.

Vestas to lay off more than 2,300 workers (AP)

COPENHAGEN, Denmark ? Vestas Wind Systems A/S, the world's biggest maker of wind turbines in terms of revenue, said Thursday it is to layoff 2,335 people worldwide and warned that an additional 1,600 jobs in the U.S. could be at risk if Congress doesn't extend tax breaks for renewable energy.

Vestas, which is based in Aarhus, Denmark, said the layoffs were part of efforts to reduce fixed costs by more than euro150 million ($191 million) as it deals with tough competition and a market slowdown following the global recession in 2008-2009.

Vestas said it would lay off 1,300 employees in Denmark; 450 of those would come in Spain, Italy, Germany and Sweden while 400 would go in China and 182 in the United States. The company is preparing for further cuts if the U.S. doesn't extend its Production Tax Credit for renewable energy, which expires at the end of 2012.

"This can result in layoffs of an additional 1,600 employees at the factories in the USA," Vestas said in a statement.

In 2010, Vestas was awarded about $51 million in federal tax credits in the U.S., where it has invested more than $1 billion in four facilities in Colorado. The U.S. operations are headquartered in Portland, Oregon.

The Danish company expanded rapidly until the economic downturn slowed investments in wind power. In addition, Vestas has lost market share to Chinese competitors.

Sluggish sales have already forced the company to slash its forecasts for 2012 twice. It has also abandoned its 2015 sales target of euro15 billion ($19.1 million) and the aim of reaching a profit margin of 15 percent.

Vestas shares fell 4 percent to 60.30 kroner ($10.32) in Copenhagen after the layoffs were announced.

Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt called it "very, very sad news" for the country, which seeks to profile itself as a green energy leader.

"This is one of the businesses that we thought would be the new way of doing green technology," she said. "Despite the setback that we have seen right now, this is and will be the right approach."

Last year, Vestas laid off 3,000 workers after posting a 24 percent drop in profits in the third quarter.

Sydbank analyst Jacob Pedersen said the cutbacks were a "big step in the right direction" to make the company more competitive.

After the cuts, Vestas said it will have around 20,400 staff and 25 factories worldwide.

I Just Controlled Windows 8 With My Eyes and It Made Me Believe in Technology Again [Video]

Windows 8 has a gorgeous Metro and finger friendly swipe-y interface that's perfectly fine but so 2011. All I want in my life in 2012 is Tobii, a company that's made the future possible: you control Windows 8 with your eyes. Seriously, it knows exactly what you're looking at when you're looking at it. It's instantaneous, it's ah-mazing and I haven't been this excited about technology since well, ever.

When I first saw Tobii, I didn't believe it would work well. You just look at it? And it does whatever you want? And that's how you control Windows 8? And... that's it? Yes! That's why it's so amazing. It's as natural as seeing, as normal as looking at somebody when you talk.

Tobii's eye control device, which looks like a horizontal rectangle glass obelisk attached to the hinge of the laptop, is incredibly accurate. The system requires a personal calibration test before you use it and some unique finger movements (akin to a smartphone), but once you get settled in, it's simply stunning. It's sniper accurate, Tobii never missed my target by more than a few pixels. It's lightning quick, I couldn't even say my next move fast enough because Tobii had recognized my eyesight already glanced away. And it can control all the swipe gestures available in Windows 8.

There was also an option to play an Asteroids-like game with Tobii and everything that's impressive about Tobii translates there too. The head movement tracking aspect of the game was a little odd but I can't get over how accurate its eye tracking ability was. Look and zap. Look and zap.

Tobii is as amazing as multitouch once was, as impressive as the Wii once was and the Kinect is now and a natural evolution of "the future". I felt like I was using fairy tale tech in a generation defining sci-fi movie rather than sitting in a plastic chair next to smelly people in a hall riddled with crappy gadgets that have no reason to exist. I don't know how successful Tobii will be in the mainstream market but it's this kind of technology that reminds me why I loved technology in the first place.

Lana Del Rey Says 'Saturday Night Live' Gig Not A 'Fluke'

'I may not have a record out now, but I have been singing for a very long time,' Del Rey tells critics who argue she hasn't earned 'SNL' slot.

Within the span of six months, Lana Del Rey has risen from a much-discussed blog curio to a major-label recording artist with an anticipated disc (Born to Die, due at the end of the month) waiting in the wings.

It's the kind of leap few have made, one that's led many to question whether she deserves so much so quickly. This weekend, she'll perform on "Saturday Night Live," the kind of gig usually reserved for the biggest of the big — and, yes, those same critics have already expressed their displeasure over that fact.

So when Del Rey stopped by the MTV Newsroom earlier this week to discuss her meteoric climb, we asked about the backlash over her "SNL" performance. Not surprisingly, she had plenty to say on the matter.

"I definitely think it's an honor. ... I don't think they've ever had anyone [perform] who didn't even have a record out, so I do appreciate it," she said. "[But I got it] because I'm a good musician. And I may not have a record out now, but I have been singing for a very long time, and I think that ['SNL' creator] Lorne [Michaels] knows that, and everyone over there knows that. It's not a fluke decision.

"It's not a traditional choice for 'Saturday Night Live,' especially because the content of the record is different; it's not pop," she continued. "But they're also having ... Bon Iver, so again, not the most traditional choice."

Though she's aware there will be plenty of folks watching her Saturday, Del Rey remains rather unfazed by the whole thing. In fact, she doesn't care what her critics have to say, and she's not interested in debating whether she's paid her dues. To be honest, she's just focused on not screwing up royally.

"You just think to yourself, 'Don't f--- up.' And that's it. That's all you ever think with live television. You hope that it goes well, and I'm just going to put my dress on, there's going to be a spotlight, I got this amazing band I've worked with this year, they'll be there," she said. "I don't even know what I'm singing yet. I'm singing 'Video Games,' and I don't know what the second song is. ... A lot of it depends on what's going on with my family and everyone around me. If I have other things to think about, and I'm not in my own way, it doesn't really matter. Sometimes it seems more important to me than others."

Exact colour of Milky Way found

Astronomers have determined exactly what colour our home galaxy the Milky Way is - and find it is aptly named.

While it appears white from Earth, that is literally a trick of the light; the question is how it looks from outside.

A comparison of star types in other galaxies gives perhaps an unsurprising result: white. But not just any white: specifically, like spring snow at an hour after sunrise or before sunset.

The finding was announed at the 219th American Astronomical Society meeting.

"For astronomers, one of the most important parameters is actually the colour of the galaxy," Jeffrey Newman of the University of Pittsburgh told BBC News.

"That tells us basically how old the stars in the galaxy are, how recently it's been forming stars - are they forming today or did its stars form billions and billions of years ago?"

Of course, it is difficult to see the Milky Way from the outside, because we are on the inside.

"But it's worse than that; not only are we looking at the Milky Way from the inside, but our view is blocked by dust," Prof Newman told the meeting.

"We can only see about one or two thousand light years in any direction."

So Prof Newman and his student Tim Licquia went about putting the Milky Way on the map of other galaxies that we can see from outside.

They gathered data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, with information on about a million galaxies.

They compared those data with what they knew about the total mass in the Milky Way, as well as the rate of star formation, looking for near matches among other galaxies.

For those most nearly matched to our own galactic home, the team took an average and came up with a precise measure of what colour it must be.

"The best description I can give would be that if you looked at new spring snow, which has a fine grain size, about an hour after dawn or an hour before sunset, you'd see the same spectrum of light that an alien astronomer in another galaxy would see looking at the Milky Way," Prof Newman told BBC News.

This "colour temperature" is somewhere between that of an old-fashioned incandescent lightbulb and noon-time sunlight; both whites, but subtly different.

And what does the colour tell us about our Milky Way's development - is it a cosmic newcomer or past its prime?

"It appears our Milky Way is on the road between those two stages - based on the colour we find, the rate of formation of stars has been declining over time," Prof Newman said.

"The Milky way is in a very interesting evolutionary state right now."
