Dana White?s video blog involves a frozen waterfall, a zipline and a cold shoulder

Check out Dana White's video blog, and ponder that he had to turn all of his waterfalls on so the pipes at his house wouldn't burst. Don't they insulate pipes in Las Vegas? Also, notice which fighter he doesn't say hello to before the UFC on Fox 6 press conference.

Enjoy, and don't forget to follow Cagewriter on Twitter for the latest from UFC on Fox 6. Today, it's Jon Jones' fan Q and A, and the weigh-ins.

Could North Korea hit the US with a missile?

Could North Korea hit the United States with a ballistic missile? Could it mount a nuclear warhead on the tip of that missile?

The short answers to these questions are ?in theory maybe, in practice probably not? and ?no, not yet.? Longer answers revolve around the fact that experts in and outside the US intelligence community have struggled for decades to understand North Korea?s weapons programs and geopolitical intent.

Yet North Korea?s current and future military capabilities are among the most profound national-security issues facing the US. They?ve taken on a new urgency this week in the face of renewed threats from the secretive Pyongyang regime. A launcher-rattling statement from North Korea on Thursday described the US as its ?sworn enemy? and announced plans for a third nuclear test and more tests of long-range missiles in the months ahead.

RECOMMENDED: Kim 101: How well do you know North Korea's leaders?

?Settling accounts with the US needs to be done with force, not with words as it regards jungle law as the rule of its survival,? said the statement from North Korea?s National Defense Commission.

When it comes to ballistic missile capabilities, official US intelligence comments about North Korea tend to be fairly bland.

?North Korea continues to pursue the development, production and deployment of ballistic missiles with increasing range and sophistication,? judges a 2012 unclassified report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to Congress on threatening technology developments, for instance.

Get our FREE 2013 Global Security Forecast now

Yet sometimes top officials sound more concerned in their public statements. In January, a few weeks after North Korea had successfully placed a satellite in orbit with the Unha-3 space-launch variant of its longest-range missile, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told American troops, ?North Korea just fired a missile. It?s an intercontinental ballistic missile, for God sakes. That means they have the capability to strike the United States.?

Secretary Panetta?s predecessor, Robert Gates, before he left office, warned that North Korea would have missiles capable of reaching the continental US by 2015 or 2016. US officials have also talked about a new, road-mobile North Korean missile that may or may not have intercontinental capabilities.

In theory, a ballistic missile based on the Unha rocket would be able to deliver a nuclear warhead-sized payload as far as Alaska, Hawaii, or part of the Lower 48, according to an analysis from the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California.

But previous launches of Unha-based rockets in 2006 and 2009 failed, raising questions about the technology?s reliability, CNS points out. In addition, it is a liquid-fueled rocket. This means it has to stand on the launchpad for hours, indeed days, for fueling. During that time it would be a sitting duck for attack.

?Although the Unha is clearly a step toward such a capability, it does not in itself represent a reliable system capable of delivering a nuclear weapon to the continental United States,? CNS judges.

North Korea has carried out two nuclear weapons tests and now says it is planning a third. The ability to produce a nuclear explosion, however, is not nearly the same thing as the ability to produce a device small enough to fit on the top of a missile.

As noted in a recent Congressional Research Service report, it is possible that Pakistani scientist A.Q. Khan provided North Korea with the same Chinese-based design for a small nuclear weapon that he provided to Libya and Iran. But most experts judge that North Korean scientists have yet to shrink their nuclear technology into a package small enough for missile delivery.

North Korean officials have long talked with bellicosity unmatched in geostrategic circles. Some say that when it comes to their nuclear missile programs, this chest thumping is largely a bluff ? pro wrestling drama translated for an international stage.

Their past missile tests have been maximized to give the appearance of performance, and they have never exploded an actual nuclear warhead design, according to RAND analyst Markus Schiller.

Thus concerns about their missile tests are overblown, wrote Mr. Schiller in a lengthy 2012 report on North Korea?s missile programs.

?Every launch further depletes the limited North Korean arsenals, and North Korea gains no real experience from these events. Since the purpose of the launches seems to be political, the United States and other nations should downplay or even ignore them,? he writes.

Not all experts are so sanguine.

For instance, the South Korean Navy has managed to retrieve first-stage debris from North Korea?s December Unha-3 launch, and certain aspects of the space junk appear to reflect novel North Korean use of foreign-obtained technology.

The engine, for instance, appears to have new and slightly unexpected technological additions, such as the ability to steer with small auxiliary engines instead of jet vanes.

The United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday condemning December's rocket launch.

North Korea is not Iraq, whose ballistic missiles turned out to be cruder than US intelligence expected, points out Jeffrey Lewis, director of the CNS East Asia Nonproliferation Program, on the Arms Control Wonk blog.

?There has been a tendency to underestimate what North Korea can do in the space and missile field, and possibly with technology in general,? Mr. Lewis writes.

More details emerge on Netflix's abandoned hardware effort, Project Griffin

Fast Company offers more details on Netflix's abandoned hardware effort

Netflix's ultimately abandoned foray into the hardware business with its own streaming device has been known for some time -- Wired revealed many of the details in a 2009 article -- but Fast Company has now uncovered some more on the effort that hadn't yet seen the light of day. That includes the actual name Netflix was using for it, Project Griffin (apparently inspired by Tim Robbins' character in The Player), and a newly-revealed internal video that offers a look at the device itself (and detour to Foxconn that Netflix would no doubt have preferred remained internal).

Despite what was said to be enthusiasm for it at the company, the set-top box would be shelved just weeks before launch and instead spun out to Roku, which released a strikingly similar-looking device itself -- Frog Design is said to have worked with Netflix on the original design. Netflix would then quickly move on to partnerships with LG and other companies on their boxes in place of its own branded device. As for the reason for the change in plans, one source said to be at a high-level tells Fast Company that Reed Hastings once said that "I want to be able to call Steve Jobs and talk to him about putting Netflix on Apple TV," adding, "but if I'm making my own hardware, Steve's not going to take my call." You can see the full internal video after the break.

India warns Kashmiris of possible nuclear attack

SRINAGAR, India (AP) ? Officials in Indian-controlled Kashmir are warning residents to be prepared for a possible nuclear war by building build bomb-proof basements and collecting two weeks' worth of food and water.

Local officials said the advisory was routine, though it was the first time it had been published in a newspaper. They said it did not signal new concerns about a nuclear attack in the region, repeatedly fought over by nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan.

A series of deadly skirmishes along the cease-fire line in recent weeks has heightened tensions between the two countries, and the timing of the advisory surprised many residents in Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"This is fueling an atmosphere of fear. Educating people is fine but not this brazen way," said resident Fayaz Ahmed.

The notice, published Monday by the Kashmir police in the Greater Kashmir newspaper, advised people to build toilet-equipped basements large enough to house their entire families for two weeks. If there is no basement, residents should construct bunkers in their front yards, the notice advised.

The shelters should be stocked with candles, battery-operated lights and radios, it said, adding that stores of nonperishable food and water should be regularly replaced to ensure it is fresh.

The notice said that during a nuclear attack, motorists should dive out of their cars toward the blast to save themselves from being crushed by their soon-to-be tumbling vehicles.

"Expect some initial disorientation as the blast wave may blow down and carry away many prominent and familiar features," it advises.

It also warns residents to keep people contaminated by fallout out of their shelters.

Yoginder Kaul, inspector-general at the civil defense and state disaster response force, said the advisory was part of a normal campaign to educate the public, and the information has been available on a government website for some time.

"We routinely train and educate people regarding different natural and man-made disasters and that's our duty. This advertisement too was part of such a campaign. Please, let's not read into this beyond that. Let it be clear that this is purely in the nature of educating people and not connected with anything else," he said.

Both India and Pakistan claim the divided Kashmir region in its entirety and have fought two wars over it.

Earlier this month, three Pakistani soldiers and two Indian soldiers were killed in the worst bout of fighting in Kashmir since a cease-fire accord was signed by the countries in 2003.

In light of the violence, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Sunday he was reviewing future ties with Pakistan.

Feud over budget for diplomatic security escalates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A long-running feud over whether Congress provides enough money for protecting U.S. diplomats escalated Tuesday as the chairman of a Senate subcommittee charged that House Republicans "blithely torpedoed embassy security funds" in stripping a $1 billion measure sought by the State Department from a hurricane relief bill.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., made the accusation on the eve of departing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's overdue appearance before the Senate and House Foreign Relations committees to testify about the Obama administration's handling of the September terrorist assault on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack.

Since then, the fingerpointing has been rampant. Democrats have blamed Republicans for cutting diplomatic security spending too deeply. The GOP has argued that lapses in management and leadership, not a shortage of money, were the reasons State Department officials failed to see the threat.

Leahy, who chairs the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that oversees the State Department's budget, said the House deleted from the Senate's version of the Superstorm Sandy emergency relief bill an amendment he wrote at the department's request to shift up to $1 billion originally intended for U.S. operations in Iraq to be used for improving U.S. security at diplomatic outposts.

Senate leaders have planned a vote this week on the House's version of the $50 billion relief bill aimed primarily at helping residents and businesses as well as state and local governments rebuild from the late October storm that devastated coastal areas in the Northeast, particularly New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Jennifer Hing, a spokeswoman for the House Appropriations Committee, said any provisions not directly related to storm relief were removed from the bill to ensure its quick passage last week in the House ? two weeks after Speaker John Boehner incurred the wrath of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and other Northeast Republicans for not holding the vote on New Year's Day. Most House Republicans ended up voting against it anyway. The Senate passed its storm aid bill in late December.

Hing said the committee is not opposed to Leahy's amendment "and agrees that the safety and security of our diplomatic personnel and operations is of the utmost importance." The measure can and should be included in the next suitable piece of legislation, she said.

Leahy, however, said any delay in approving the transfer authority, even a short one, slows the State Department's ability to follow through on recommendations for improving diplomatic security made by an independent panel that reviewed the Benghazi attack.

"I know from personal experience that there are many thoughtful Republicans in positions of responsibility in the House who want to do the right thing," Leahy said. "Yet a small but apparently dominant obstructionist cadre within the Republican ranks seemingly is willing to push the bounds of irresponsibility to ever greater heights."

The independent review panel said serious lapses in management and leadership left the consulate badly unprepared, but it also called for a greater commitment from Congress to support the State Department's needs. State asked for close to $2.4 billion in its 2013 budget for overseas security. The transfer of as much as $1 billion would speed up the construction of more Marine security guard units at overseas posts, additional diplomatic security agents and for security upgrades and construction at new embassies.

Since 2007, Congress has increased spending by 27 percent, or roughly a half-billion dollars, on security at foreign diplomatic posts, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. Millions more were added over that period specifically for increased security in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

But neither Congress nor the State Department added or sought additional spending specifically for security at U.S. posts in Libya despite growing instability in the country, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee said in a report in December on the Benghazi attack.

Insulated Cross-arms, manufactured and sold by University of Manchester spin-out company Arago Technology Ltd., have been installed on pylons in some of the most stark and remote areas of the UK to test their resistance to extreme weather and are also being tested for an eventual use with 400,000 volt systems at a coastal site in Scotland.

Tests have also been carried out at the University's High Voltage Laboratory which has subjected them to lightning strikes of more than 1.4 million volts.

Modelling shows that in some cases the new Cross-arms are capable of increasing the power carrying capability of a pylon by up to 2.5 times.

Installing the insulated Cross-arms would aid the UK meet the growing demand for electricity and help in the connection of 'green' forms of electricity generation.

The dramatic increase in capacity of the electricity system that would result from the installation of the cross-arms could reduce the need to build more pylons and could reduce household bills.

Without them, utility companies would be faced with the expensive and laborious task of applying to build more pylons. Receiving planning permission alone can take many years with no guarantee of success.

Resistance to plans to build more overhead lines and the cost of undergrounding have greatly increased demand on utility companies with further demand expected if the UK's householders move from gas to electricity for domestic heating and if electric vehicles gain in popularity. The insulated Cross-arms enable increased electricity supply using the same pylons or the use of smaller pylons when building a new electricity line.

Arago Technology is now planning to install 12 Cross-arms with energy companies Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHETL) and National Grid (NG) with a view to further roll-out.

Professor Simon Rowland, from the University's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, said: "It's great to see research being translated into solutions for society. If the insulated Cross-arms can help to connect renewable energy sources with lower cost and less visual impact, everybody will benefit"

Arago's Commercial Manager Dr Frank Allison added: "The installation of the insulated Cross-arms in a number of locations is a landmark event for Arago and its partners and vindicates the hours of hard work and dedication by all members of the team.

"Since energisation equivalent to a 400,000 volt system, early results are very positive suggesting the insulating Cross-arms are performing as expected, although more tests are needed."

The Cross-arm won the Power & Energy Award at the IET Innovation awards ceremony at the end of last year.

Justinianos' Bronx Home is 12 Inches From ... - AOL Real Estate

With its charming red brick exterior, white trim and potted plants, the Justinianos' cozy two-bedroom home in the Pelham Bay neighborhood of the Bronx in New York City is almost idyllic -- that is, if it didn't have a full-blown construction site hugging one side of the home. Just 12 inches from their house are the beginnings of a four-story apartment complex. The structure has been built so close that the Justinianos are able to reach out of their kitchen window and touch the cinder-block wall -- a window that had once overlooked an empty, grassy yard.

"It's an eyesore, and it's utterly ridiculous," Fernando Justiniano, 49, told AOL Real Estate. "Really sad that the city allowed the developer to build that thing so close to another house."

According to Justiniano, the developer of the apartment complex, Anton Tinaj, initially told neighbors he would be building a "little home for his mother" on the 50-by-100-foot lot. But after Justiniano's wife, Patty, 44, did some digging on the internet, she discovered Tinaj was actually planning to build an eight-story apartment building with 16 dwellings. (Since then, the plan has been revised to build a four-story apartment building with 14 dwellings, slated for completion in June).

Justiniano said the structure has been built so close that ten of his home's windows have been rendered "useless" -- directly facing the future apartment complex's cinder-block wall, giving the illusion of perpetual darkness. The Justinianos' dining room now has no exposure to sunlight. Furthermore, the structure is so close that the Justinianos are unable to clean or make necessary repairs to their first- and second-story gutters, which are almost touching the cinder-block wall.

But despite the Justinianos' furor, The NYC Department of Buildings has said that the structure is within legal limits and is entirely compliant with district zoning regulations. The home is zoned in an area that does not require side yards, allowing the developer to build right up to the property line one foot away. (Although in the neighboring neighborhood of Throg's Neck, it is required that developers build six to eight feet outside property lines).

Justiniano complained that even if someone can legally do it, that doesn't mean they should: With free range over a sprawling lot, Tinaj could have easily moved the construction just one or two more feet away.

"It's common sense and courtesy," said Justiniano. "It's not just the fact that it looks bad. Think about what happens when the new tenants move in. There will be 14 tenants living right there, twelve inches away from us, and we'll hear everything."

Considering the home's blocked windows and noise and privacy concerns, Justiniano is concerned that the too-close-for-comfort apartment complex will cause their home's market value to plummet.

"I mean, would you buy this house?" Justiniano said. "You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that [the apartment complex] will affect our home's resale value."

At this point, Justiniano said, his family has given up hope that Tinaj's construction will halt, or that there's any recourse to get the structure torn down. (Almost three floors have already been built since construction started six months ago). He added that the zoning laws have rendered any fight futile, though they are able to file a zoning challenge, which he said isn't likely to change anything. ("We're grandfathered in," Justiniano admitted). But Justiniano hopes that their family's story will help prevent other similar situations from happening to other homeowners in the future.

"I would never want this to happen to anyone else," said Justiniano. AOL Real Estate reached out to Tinaj, who declined to comment.

Take Yourself To The Next Level With These Self Improvement Tips ...

How about taking a few minutes of your time in order to learn simple steps on improving the rest of your life? If you pay attention to what we have to say, that is what this article can do for you. Read the tips and tricks that we have provided for you, so that you can start to reach your true potential.

Don?t look at your outside beauty; seek out inner beauty. Wearing the latest styles or looking like a movie star does not make a real difference. Your personality will be what matters in the long run. Try and change the person you are inside rather than focusing on the outside.

Identify what is keeping you from being successful. Doing this is extremely hard for a lot of people. The first step in dealing with our weaknesses is actually identifying them. Your future will look much brighter if you acquire new strengths.

TIP! Set realistic goals that you can accomplish, and you?ll enjoy life so much more. Figure out what you do and do not do well, and you will learn a lot about yourself.

When working on your self improvement, it is often helpful to see what others have done. You can avoid both personal and business mistakes by knowing the trials that others have faced. Knowing that other people have succeeded at the same goal will make it seem more attainable to you.

It isn?t possible to care for someone else at your own expense. No matter your path, or whether you?re failing or thriving, take time out to restore and rest yourself.

Prospective employers will be more concerned as to whether you can do the job well. There are only very few exceptions to this rule, such as working with a large financial institution. It is really more important to simply have a quality degree that will open up opportunities for you.

TIP! Change should be a conscious choice, and is in fact a result of it. We need to choose the change if we expect to really grow.

Emergency Fund

Begin a fund for emergency purposes. Many people think that a credit card counts as an emergency fund. By putting aside only a few dollars each week, you can rapidly build a respectable emergency fund. These reserves can be of great assistance now and in the future, because the amount owed will drop, rather than build.

Leadership is essential in your personal development. Although there are many different definitions of leadership, the most common being ?influence?. Examine yourself as a leader. Think about the circumstances that have had the most influence in your life. What changes did those events bring forth in you? What do you feel makes you a good team player? By knowing yourself and your motives better, you can more easily integrate into a leadership role with others.

TIP! Fostering a strict sense of self discipline is a great way to improve yourself. Your body yearns to give into temptations, but you can control the desires with practice.

You can be unnecessarily stressed if you overact to situations. Think about the situation, and try to find constructive ways to deal with it. If a mistake is the issue, there are ways to correct it or cope with living with your mistake. When you start feeling anxious about a situation, focus on the positive things, not the negative ones.

Follow your own principles as strictly as you can. Your personal beliefs create the foundation for who you are. If you have good reason to have these beliefs, you will feel more confident and grow your self esteem by adhering to these beliefs and principles. This will also promote consistency in your life and actions, which is a trait almost everyone finds admirable.

Begin a special savings for emergencies. Most of us depend on credit cards to pay for unexpected expenses. All you will need to do is save a couple of dollars per week. This fund will help you stay out of debt if you have to face an emergency.

TIP! Your willpower can help you find more positive things in your life. Your attitude towards others will affect what happens to you.

Regular Exercise

Exercise even if you are at your ideal weight. There are many other benefits from regular exercise. For instance, regular exercise is a great way to boost your mood.

You should shoot to be the best at whatever it is that you do. Follow your passion to the greatest possible aspirations. You can?t be the best at everything, but you can inspire people in the same field as you. Enhance your standing in your niche, and your self-esteem will climb too.

TIP! Part of setting goals to better yourself is having an idea of where you want your life to go. Having long-term goals is great, because you could have a big change in your perspective.

When you are actively trying to improve yourself, failing to do well at something can hurt your self-esteem more than it otherwise would. However, failure is really an opportunity to grow as a person. Failure is only another way of learning about your strengths and weaknesses. Look at failure as another opportunity for you to improve and overcome.

As hard as it may seem, you must eliminate worry from your life. Most of the things you worry about never materialize, and creating them in the present is of no value to your self improvement. Instead of worrying, consider the worst case scenario, and start taking concrete steps to address that worst case. You will then be prepared and able to move forward.

One simple step to your personal development is doing things for the benefit of other people. You can cultivate a strong, positive character, by learning how to make sacrifices for the sake of helping others. When making sacrifices that help others without hurting your well-being, you can become that kind person that you wanted to be.

TIP! Often, the enemy of happiness is stress. When our minds are busy dealing with stress, we are causing damage to our entire body, both mentally and physically.

Try to make each day more excellent than the previous one. Discover innovative ways to increase your character development. Focus on a specific task that you want to do better today than yesterday.

Staying positive takes a lot of willpower and it might mean that if you are positive towards others, then good things will come to you. For this reason, it is important to wish only positive things for the people in your life. You are less likely to get burdened with bad feelings if you are striving to stay positive.

Are you having a difficult time meeting someone that you want to share your life with? Use the net to jump start your search. Almost half of all couples, about 40%, met their partner online. You may find one that is looking for someone like you. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

TIP! Sexual capitol is an important new trait that?s being researched. This means using your charm rather than your sexuality to acquire things you want.

Therapy might be beneficial if your problems are severe. Books that teach self help are helpful, but do not contain the one-on-one personal touch you can get from a therapist. Sometimes, simply talking through your problems can help you conquer them. Reading even the best self-help book cannot start up a back-and-forth dialog, the way a therapy session can.

Seek out those with similar positive attitudes. This will reinforce the aspects of your personality that you are seeking to develop, while allowing you to distance yourself from toxic individuals in your life.

Everybody makes mistakes, and making healthy food choices is definitely one field in which mistakes get made. Admit your poor choices, and move on with your life.

TIP! Failure at some task can seem like a devastating injury to your self confidence. However, failure is really an opportunity to grow as a person.

There is no way to make everyone in your life happy, so it is best to focus on first pleasing yourself. This doesn?t mean that you should only think of yourself, but in some cases, you really need to put yourself first. Whatever you do, make sure you follow your own values. The more you are a person who you like and respect, the happier you?ll be.

This information is so great that you probably are itching to not only put it into practice for yourself but share it with your loved ones, too. Diligently applying the suggestions in this article can generate positive changes you?ll enjoy for the entirety of your life. When you dedicate the time and determination to making serious personal change, the benefits are endless.

Do not overdo it when you are trying to achieve your personal development goal. Take your best shot, but know when you have reached your limit. You need to be careful about your physical health even while you are striving to achieve your goals. You will not be able to continue improving yourself if you don?t take care of your body.

TIP! Always have the attitude that you are worth it when working on your personal development plan. You need to be aware that you owe that to yourself.

Loneliness, like chronic stress, taxes the immune system, researchers find

Jan. 19, 2013 ? New research links loneliness to a number of dysfunctional immune responses, suggesting that being lonely has the potential to harm overall health.

Researchers found that people who were more lonely showed signs of elevated latent herpes virus reactivation and produced more inflammation-related proteins in response to acute stress than did people who felt more socially connected.

These proteins signal the presence of inflammation, and chronic inflammation is linked to numerous conditions, including coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer's disease, as well as the frailty and functional decline that can accompany aging.

Reactivation of a latent herpes virus is known to be associated with stress, suggesting that loneliness functions as a chronic stressor that triggers a poorly controlled immune response.

"It is clear from previous research that poor-quality relationships are linked to a number of health problems, including premature mortality and all sorts of other very serious health conditions. And people who are lonely clearly feel like they are in poor-quality relationships," said Lisa Jaremka, a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research at Ohio State University and lead author of the research.

"One reason this type of research is important is to understand how loneliness and relationships broadly affect health. The more we understand about the process, the more potential there is to counter those negative effects -- to perhaps intervene. If we don't know the physiological processes, what are we going to do to change them?"

The results are based on a series of studies conducted with two populations: a healthy group of overweight middle-aged adults and a group of breast cancer survivors. The researchers measured loneliness in all studies using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, a questionnaire that assesses perceptions of social isolation and loneliness.

Jaremka will present the research January 19 at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology annual meeting in New Orleans.

The researchers first sought to obtain a snapshot of immune system behavior related to loneliness by gauging levels of antibodies in the blood that are produced when herpes viruses are reactivated.

Participants were 200 breast cancer survivors who were between two months and three years past completion of cancer treatment with an average age of 51 years. Their blood was analyzed for the presence of antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus.

Both are herpes viruses that infect a majority of Americans. About half of infections do not produce illness, but once a person is infected, the viruses remain dormant in the body and can be reactivated, resulting in elevated antibody levels, or titers -- again, often producing no symptoms but hinting at regulatory problems in the cellular immune system.

Lonelier participants had higher levels of antibodies against cytomegalovirus than did less lonely participants, and those higher antibody levels were related to more pain, depression and fatigue symptoms. No difference was seen in Epstein-Barr virus antibody levels, possibly because this reactivation is linked to age and many of these participants were somewhat older, meaning reactivation related to loneliness would be difficult to detect, Jaremka said.

Previous research has suggested that stress can promote reactivation of these viruses, also resulting in elevated antibody titers.

"The same processes involved in stress and reactivation of these viruses is probably also relevant to the loneliness findings," Jaremka said. "Loneliness has been thought of in many ways as a chronic stressor -- a socially painful situation that can last for quite a long time."

In an additional set of studies, the scientists sought to determine how loneliness affected the production of proinflammatory proteins, or cytokines, in response to stress. These studies were conducted with 144 women from the same group of breast cancer survivors and a group of 134 overweight middle-aged and older adults with no major health problems.

Baseline blood samples were taken from all participants, who were then subjected to stress -- they were asked to deliver an impromptu five-minute speech and perform a mental arithmetic task in front of a video camera and three panelists. Researchers followed by stimulating the participants' immune systems with lipopolysaccharide, a compound found on bacterial cell walls that is known to trigger an immune response.

In both populations, those who were lonelier produced significantly higher levels of a cytokine called interleukin-6, or IL-6, in response to acute stress than did participants who were more socially connected. Levels of another cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, also rose more dramatically in lonelier participants than in less lonely participants, but the findings were significant by statistical standards in only one study group, the healthy adults.

In the study with breast cancer survivors, researchers also tested for levels of the cytokine interleukin 1-beta, which was produced at higher levels in lonelier participants.

When the scientists controlled for a number of factors, including sleep quality, age and general health measures, the results were the same.

"We saw consistency in the sense that more lonely people in both studies had more inflammation than less lonely people," Jaremka said.

"It's also important to remember the flip side, which is that people who feel very socially connected are experiencing more positive outcomes," she said.

Canada: Influenza outbreak has many Edmontonians rethinking immunization

Via Global TV Edmonton:?Influenza outbreak has many Edmontonians rethinking immunization. Click through for a video as well as the complete story. Excerpt:
The recent outbreak of influenza in our province has many Edmontonians rethinking the notion of getting vaccinated.?
Since August, there have been over 1,100 confirmed cases of the flu in our province. Over 450 of those cases were here in Edmonton.?
Dr. Marcia Johnson, a Medical Officer of Health with Alberta Health Services (AHS) says the number of cases of influenza is up this year compared to previous years.?
As of January 5, public health had given approximately 149,000 doses of influenza vaccine but, that number doesn't take into account the people who were immunized by their doctor or pharmacist.?
"Certainly, the numbers immunized by public health in the Edmonton area is less than it was last year," Johnson explained.?
The increase in the number of cases of the flu has led to capacity pressures at area hospitals, partially because more people than usual are requesting treatment for influenza-like and gastro-intestinal-type illnesses, according to AHS. The strain on the health care system led to the cancellation of at least five surgeries in Edmonton.?
But, Johnson says over the past week, the number of people coming into public health centres to get immunized has increased.?
"With all the attention, people have realized that it's here and it's causing trouble and it feels awful."?
It's not too late to get immunized, and because viruses can be very different, immunization is still recommended for those who have already had a dose of the flu.

Obama, Karzai announce US military shift to support role in Afghanistan, ahead of schedule

    Report By: Nina Rai

    Washington, Jan. 12, 2013

The US President Barack Obama and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai announced that American military mission in Afghanistan will shift this spring, from a combat to a support role. In effect, US forces will be handing over the baton of security throughout Afghanistan to indigenous troops, a few months earlier than expected.

The agreement on the future role of the US and its 66,000 troops still stationed and serving in Afghanistan was announced in the White House on Friday, after one in the series of bilateral meetings between Obama and Karzai.

The ?spring? rearrangement for the US army came months earlier than expected. Originally, the US military mission?s transition to a support role in training local troops in Afghanistan was expected to take place in summer. "Starting this spring, our troops will have a different mission - training, advising, assisting Afghan forces. It will be a historic moment and another step toward full Afghan sovereignty," Obama informed.

Obama even promised to soon solicit the counsel of his top military advisers on executing troop withdrawals, at the same reaffirming that the US transition out of the Asian country would conclude by the end of 2014, when "this long war will come to a responsible end". He further asserted: "Make no mistake. Our path is clear and we are moving forward."

At the same time, Obama said, he felt assured: "Every day, Afghans are standing up to take control of their security, and as they do our troops will come home." As per the joint US-Afghan announcement by spring, most unilateral US combat operations would come to an end, with forces pulling back their patrols of Afghan villages.

Elated, Hamid Karzai said: "I am very happy to hear from the (US) president, as we also discussed earlier, that in spring this year the Afghan forces will be fully responsible for providing security to the Afghan people." Afghan president also expressed his thanks to the US for the gains made in his country, and vowed to maintain them even after the planned pull-out by the American troops.

However, Karzai made it clear, that he would not be seeking re-election in 2014. Currently there are more than 352,000 Afghans taking military training or on duty in police or army security roles. Obama and Karzai, whose relationship has been strained at times, also discussed the possibility of reconciliation with the Taliban group. Both endorsed talks with Taliban, suggesting the opening of a de-facto Taliban office in Doha, Qatar to aid the ongoing talks.

Obama also stressed on the need for support from neighboring Pakistan, as its role is vital for war or peace. According to him, any reconciliation requires constructive support from across the region, including Pakistan. Obama went on to say that ?a stable and secure Afghanistan is in the interest not only of the Afghan people and the United States, but of the entire region." The two presidents also discussed the possible roles for US troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014, the timeline set for only a residual US force to remain.

President Obama did not specify exactly how many troops would remain or be withdrawn, leaving it vague. It was only earlier this week that the White House left open the possibility of withdrawal of all US forces from Afghanistan in 2014, after more than a decade of war. It is also the year when President Karzai will be stepping down from office, with elections to be held for his successor. So for Afghanistan it will, in effect, be a military, political and economic transition.

    Opinion

The basic purpose behind the American mission in Afghanistan has been to prevent it from becoming a safe haven for foreign terrorists and militants. It was in early 2010 that the actual counter-insurgency efforts by US and NATO military forces in Afghanistan began and since then significant progress has been made in that direction.

The increase in number of troops to 33,000 troops helped to impede the Taliban's rise. They were forced to run away from their safe havens in the strategic provinces of Kandahar and Helmand. During this period the Afghan security forces received all help, training and equipment. They were basically strengthened by the allied forces.

A hasty withdrawal now by the US would undermine all gains made so far and also undo the achievements of the past decade. Moreover, if the US were to leave the place prematurely there is every chance of Afghanistan reverting to its old state and once again becoming a safe haven for the militants groups.

It is therefore imperative for the US and Afghan governments to strengthen their relationship, restoring their trust and confidence in each other and continue doing so. What President Obama and President Karzai have done now through the meetings is a step in the right direction.

But at this juncture it is important for President Obama not to place much faith on the Taliban nor have any negotiations with them. They are basically militants who thrive on violence and bloodshed. Nothing much can be achieved by talking to them, as their agenda is beyond doing any good for Afghanistan.

Till date, the Taliban has neither shown any readiness to renounce violence or terror; or for that matter take part in any sensible political process or discourse. If the US exits from Afghanistan without setting things in order there, it would only help the Taliban to regain their influence and carry out their bizarre diktats.

Another scary scenario, in the event of US leaving prematurely, is that it would create an environment whereby al-Qaida will regroup and revive in the region. Scarier is both Taliban and al-Qaida getting together in the safe havens in the rocky Afghanistan terrain. The combination of the two groups would be both lethal and dangerous.

Such a scenario poses unimaginable risks to US national security, as there is every possibility of them plotting terror attacks on US soil or against any of its allies. The US must therefore strengthen its partnership with the Afghan authorities, take them on-board as an ally and demonstrate unity of purpose with them.

Most importantly, the US needs to focus on having a strategic long-term partnership agreement with Kabul. The current understanding between Obama and Karzai to maintain a residual military force for training and counter-terrorism purposes is an excellent one and must be carried forward post-2014. It will go a long way in ensuring peace and stability in the region.

(AP) ? Kobe and Vanessa Bryant are staying together.

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar and his wife both announced they've called off their divorce Friday on social media.

Shortly after Vanessa posted the news on Instagram, Kobe confirmed it on Facebook less than an hour before the Lakers hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"I am happy to say that Vanessa and I are moving on with our lives together as a family," Bryant wrote. "When the show ends and the music stops, the journey is made beautiful by having that someone to share it with. Thank you all for your support and prayers!"

Vanessa Bryant filed for divorce in December 2011, seeking to end a marriage that began in April 2001 and survived a sexual assault accusation against the five-time NBA champion guard. The Bryants have two daughters, Natalia and Gianna.

But Kobe and Vanessa haven't acted much like a divorcing couple in the past year. Vanessa and the Bryant daughters have attended many Lakers home games, waiting for Bryant to emerge from the Lakers' locker room and leaving Staples Center together.

"We are pleased to announce that we have reconciled," Vanessa posted on Instagram. "Our divorce action will be dismissed. We are looking forward to our future together."

Vanessa Bryant stood by her husband when he was charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman in Colorado in 2003, saying Kobe Bryant was only guilty of "the mistake of adultery." A year after the accusation, prosecutors dropped the charges because the woman did not want to go ahead with a trial.

Bryant is the fifth-leading scorer in NBA history in his 17th season with the Lakers, who drafted him in 1996. He is leading the NBA in scoring this season, and is very likely to play in his 15th NBA All-Star game next month in Houston.

Bryant met his wife at a music video shoot in 1999, when Vanessa Laine was 18 years old. They became engaged six months later.
