Blind Chinese activist may soon depart for U.S.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Blind Chinese legal activist Chen Guangcheng said on Saturday he had left a hospital in Beijing and was at the airport where he expected to be departing for the United States, a move that would signal the end of a diplomatic crisis between the two country.

Chen, who has been in hospital for the past three weeks since he sought refuge in the U.S. embassy, said he believed he would be headed on a flight to the United States, but added he was still uncertain of it. The U.S. embassy was not immediately available for comment.

Chen's escape from house arrest in northeastern China last month and subsequent refuge in the U.S. embassy caused huge embarrassment for China, and led to a serious diplomatic rift while U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was visiting Beijing.

Chen told Reuters by telephone: "I'm at the airport now. I've already left the hospital. But there are many things that are still unclear."

Chen said that his wife and two children were at the airport with him, accompanied by hospital staff.

Two police cars were stationed below the walkway to the plane Chen was expected to board, and about 10 security officials in plainclothes circulated around the airport.

Several photographers were in position at the waiting area, but passengers at the gate to Chen's flight appeared not to know that he would be on the same flight.

"Yes, I might be heading for a flight to the United States, but I haven't been told, and I haven't received our passports, so I'm not sure yet," Chen said. "We're waiting to find out what's happening."

DRAMATIC ESCAPE

The development came about three weeks after Chen arrived at the Chaoyang Hospital from the U.S. embassy, where he had taken refuge after a dramatic escape from 19 months under house arrest in his home village.

Chen's confinement, his escape and the furore that ensued have made him part of China's dissident folklore: a blind prisoner outfoxing Communist Party controls in an echo of the man who stood down an army tank near Tiananmen Square in 1989.

In 2006, Chen was sentenced to more than four years in jail on charges - vehemently denied by his wife and lawyers - that he whipped up a crowd that disrupted traffic and damaged property.

Chen had led campaigns for farmers and disabled citizens and exposed forced abortions.

He was formally released in 2010 but remained under house arrest in his home village in northeastern Shandong province, which officials turned into a fortress of walls, security cameras and guards in plain clothes who kept Chen isolated.

The village of Dongshigu, where Chen's mother and other relatives remain, is still under lockdown.

The U.S. embassy had earlier thought it had stuck a deal to allow Chen to stay in China without retribution, but that fell apart as Chen grew worried about his family's safety. He changed his mind about staying in China and asked to travel to the United States.

Human rights are a major factor in relations between China and the United States, even though Washington needs China's help on issues such as Iran, North Korea, Sudan and the fragile global economy.

Chen Guangcheng's nephew, Chen Kegui, was denied his family's choice of lawyers on Friday to defend a charge of "intentional homicide", the latest in a series of moves to deny him legal representation, and underscores the hardline stance taken against Chen Guangcheng's family. (nL4E8GI4F0)

Earlier on Saturday, Chen said the authorities' drive to "manipulate" his nephew's case would not succeed.

Van Halen Tour Dates: Postponed

Right now... is apparently a good time to disappoint fans.

Multiple sources are reporting that Van Halen has postponed many summer tour dates it announced in December.

An insider close to the iconic rock band told The Associated Press that the group will not meet a few of its upcoming commitments, and band’s website lists active tour dates only through June 26.

Van Halen Photo

Originally, dozens of performances had been on the docket well into July.

No word has been given for the postponements and no representatives from Van Halen has spoken on the topic yet.

UPDATE: A source now says no one within the group is feuding, but members are just "burned out" and need a break.

Technology is helping communication companies merge telephone, television and Internet services, but a push to deregulate may leave some customers on the wrong side of the digital divide during this convergence, according to a Penn State telecommunications researcher.

"Moving away from copper lines is an example of abandoning obsolete technology and embracing technology that is faster, better, cheaper and more convenient," said Rob Frieden, Pioneers Chair in Cable Television and professor of telecommunications and law. "But the risk is that we may be creating a digital divide -- not necessarily a divide between the rich and poor, but between the information rich and information poor."

Telephone companies are lobbying for government regulators to free them of their traditional role as a public utility, citing the convergence and availability of new communication technologies, such as cellular phones and fiber optic cable, that make copper-based telephone land lines obsolete, according to Frieden. However, not all these alternatives are as affordable and as ubiquitous as copper landlines, a problem that could leave many rural residents underserved, he said.

The researcher, who presented his critique at the End of the Phone System workshop held at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, today (May 17), said that rural customers could replace land line telephones with cellular phones, for example, but most cell phone companies charge a fee for each minute of use -- metering -- while most fees for land lines are unmetered and are paid through a fixed monthly charge.

Frieden also doubts that cellular service will be as dependable as landlines.

"Cell phone companies have these colorful maps that show how well they cover areas," Frieden said. "But there are lots of places -- including places in rural Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New York -- that do not have cell phone service, or offer limited services not suitable for broadband, Internet access."

Fiber optic lines are glass wires that can carry voice, television and Internet signals. For instance, fiber optic equipment is often used for Voice Over Internet Protocol -- VOIP -- a technology that uses broadband Internet to carry such services as voice, texting and fax.

While fiber optic lines are more common now, they are usually not found in rural or remote areas.

"The phone companies are right," said Frieden. "There are other forms of competition now, but these alternatives are not fair or adequate everywhere."

As communication technologies merge, telephone companies face stiff competition from cable companies, which are classified as information service providers by the government and face limited regulation. Frieden said that telephone companies, however, are regulated as a utility. As a utility, phone companies -- called carriers of last resort -- are obligated to provide service to customers. To increase profitability, telephone companies would like to be released from the carrier-of-last-resort designation that binds them to providing high-cost, labor-intensive telephone landline service.

Frieden said that the push to end the phone company's status as carriers of last resort may be the first step toward complete deregulation.

While telephone company lobbyists suggest that the market forces will ensure that all customers will eventually receive equal service in a deregulated environment, Frieden is skeptical about this promise.

"Everyone wants to say, the marketplace is great," Frieden said. "But there's also something called market failure particularly in rural and low-income areas."

Samsung pushes graphene one step closer to silicon-supremecy

Graphene has long-held notions of grandeur over its current silicon overlord, but a few practical issues have always kept its takeover bid grounded. Samsung, however, thinks it's cracked at least one of those -- graphene's inability to switch off current. Previous attempts to use graphene as a transistor have involved converting it to a semi-conductor, but this also reduces its electron mobility, negating much of the benefit. Samsung's Advanced Institute of Technology has created a graphene-silicon "Schottky barrier" that brings graphene this much-needed current-killing ability, without losing its electron-shuffling potential. The research also explored potential logic device applications based on the same technology. So, does this mean we'll finally get our flea-sized super computer implant? Maybe, not just yet, but the wheels have certainly been oiled.

How to Find a Real Estate Agent You can Trust | The NH Blog

May 17, 2012 | Barbara Leech | Categories : Home Buying Tips, Home Selling Tips | Leave a comment

If you have been looking at homes online or thinking it is time to sell your house, but don?t know to whom you can entrust this monumental job, you are not alone.

A home is probably the biggest investment of your money you will ever make, and it also has an emotional tie to your life and your memories. Your agent must be someone who is knowledgeable, proactive and connects with you and your wants and needs. The right person can make your upcoming real estate transaction painless and very rewarding, but how do you find him? Here are a few tips on where to start your search to find the right real estate agent for you.

  1. Look for an agent and company you can trust: The best agent for you is an experienced professional who will listen to you, conduct herself in an ethical manner and knows your market. Also, look for a company that is large enough to have the tools and the backing to market your home to its highest potential. Their agents tend to go to all the additional training and seminars. These are the agents who have colleagues in the office who can advise if there are any unusual circumstances involved in a transaction. You want to not only get a good agent but a good team working behind her.
  2. All Realtors? are licensed to sell real estate, but not all real estate agents are Realtors?. Only Realtors? can display the Realtor? logo. Realtors? belong to the National Association of Realtors and pledge to follow a set Code of Ethics, which is a comprehensive list containing 17 articles and underlying standards of practice, which establish levels of conduct that are higher than ordinary business practices or those required by law.
  3. Ask for referrals from friends, coworkers or family: Successful agents become more successful because they do their job right and put their clients needs first. Ask the people you know for the name of their agent- even if it was a couple years ago- and ask them to describe their experiences with this real estate agent. Look for the one who went above and beyond for her client.
  4. Customer testimonials: As you look at individual Realtor pages on the company website, many include their customer testimonials. This often gives you some insight as to whether they are simply nice and get the job done or if they really worked hard for these customers to make something happen.
  5. Attend a couple of open houses: When you go to an open house you meet the listing agent and there is no pressure to choose them or sign on the dotted line to anything. Collect business cards and make notes on them. If you?re thinking about selling your home, pay attention to how the agent is showing the home. Is she polite and informative; appear knowledgeable? Does she have professional-looking promotional material about the home? Is she trying to sell features of the home and making the showing a good experience for you? If she is just sitting there and leaving you on your own, this may not be the best one for selling your home. Look for the one that connects with the customer.
  6. Look for a sign: Pay attention to the listing signs on the lawns in and around your neighborhood. Make note of when they go up and how quickly the sold sign appears. Make a note as to how many times you see a certain name. Some agents could be ?specialists? in your neighborhood. Call and ask them about their experience.

The next step is to set up a meeting with a couple of your top picks in Realtors to get to know them in person and ask some questions. You want to know things like how long they have been an agent and any specialized training they have. You also want to know that you can feel comfortable talking with this person and saying what you really want. Once you find the right connection you are on your way to a successful real estate transaction and the next step in your journey.

Marriage, Motherhood, and Career: Have You Found that Balance ...

Note the arrangement of the terms and how career comes last. The same would be true if this article was titled: Marriage, Fatherhood and Career. Over the last few years, a lot of time and money has gone into studies dedicated to picking apart the correlation between working women and the state of marriages today. And although African women are more culturally in tune with their responsibilities and contributions, we are not immune to getting caught up in the culture of our host countries. While most of the studies have become redundant and meaningless and outright annoying, there is some truth to the fact that the rise in the number of career women has somewhat contributed to the down-spiral state of marriages today. One would think it would be the opposite.

But while studies have focused on the negatives, some women have proven that we can, indeed, have it all ? the successful, happy marriage, great and happy responsible children, and a thriving career ? if we know how to prioritize all three. All three require a lot of nurturing, attention, time and patience. However, women who do not know which one to dedicate more of themselves to, are the ones who eventually see the collapse of any one of the three, or all three for the unlucky ones. Women who end up indeed having it all are the ones who are smart enough to realize that it takes balance and a good sense of prioritizing.

An important question women should have at the back of their minds as they apply themselves in these three areas is this: which of the three responsibilities is the most important? Which one, if asked to choose, could you live without; because let?s face it, as much as we want all three to have equal importance, we will find ourselves having to make sacrifices at one point or another.

Ellen is a successful attorney with a husband and four children. She has one work rule: ?never let work get in the way of family?! She never works more than a certain number of hours a week and she is out of the office by 3:30 in the afternoon so she can be home when the kids make it home from school. If she is in the middle of a conference call and one of her children calls, she excuses herself to take the call ? no matter how trivial. To her, family is everything.

Some of you may think this is a woman who probably needs to just stay home and be a housewife if her family means that much to her. But, this works well for Ellen. She has her priorities, and she?s unwilling to compromise. She made that clear before she accepted the job. After all, she?s brilliant at what she does and she gets her work done. That?s what?s most important.

Mansah is also a successful attorney with a husband and three children. Her rule is to never let family get in the way of work. She works long hours and is always home after dinner. She works no less than 60 hours a week and is always too tired when she gets home to pay any attention to her husband and children. Her children don?t remember what their mom?s cooking tastes like because they rely on their father and the babysitter for that. She does not allow either her husband or her children to interrupt her at work.

Obviously, we can all argue that should Mansah find herself divorced or, worse yet, replaced by another woman, and her children going wayward, she need not be surprised because she has failed to nurture the other aspects of her life ? her marriage and her family.

Many women argue that it takes a lot of time and money to build a career and to invest in one?s dreams. And one would surely hope that the same amount ? of not greater ? of time and energy goes into building a successful marriage and building a family. It is up to us women to decide which is more important to us. No one is asking that we choose, we simply need to gain some balance in the sense of priorities and then maybe, just maybe, we might be able to put things into perspective. ??

Are you a career woman with a husband and children, or do you simply have an opinion you?d like to share. Please do so below. Or, perhaps, you liked what you just read, please use the pretty social buttons below to show us some loveJ

RIM teams up with TomTom to bring HD Traffic to BlackBerry devices

Looks like executive switches aren't the only thing happening at Research in Motion this morning. Earlier today, the Canadian company announced a partnership with TomTom that will see the GPS outfit's HD Traffic service make its way onto BlackBerry devices. Essentially, this means a handful of BlackBerry applications such as Traffic, Maps and Locate Services will now be powered by TomTom's offering -- a feature we've previously seen on iOS and even your browser. Notably, RIM says developers are going to have access to "mapping and traffic" for use within their own apps, which is bound to make a few of you some Berry happy campers. Hey, at least RIM's making an effort.

John Travolta Denies Sexual Battery Claims, Denounces Lawsuit

As we reported Monday, a $2 million lawsuit by an anonymous plaintiff who claims John Travolta sexually assaulted a masseur hired to massage the actor.

A rep for Travolta strongly denies all the claims, however, and says the actor intends to countersue the masseur, identified as John Doe in his court filing.

The rep says the accuser and his attorney(s) may be subject to a malicious prosecution lawsuit for their story, which he claims is totally fabricated.

Travolta says the lawsuit claiming he sexually assaulted a masseur is a total lie, and that he was 2,475 miles from the place it supposedly happened.

The actor was on the East Coast the day the masseur claims he got on the massage table and grabbed the guy's penis, masturbated and so forth.

The statement from his rep says simply that "This lawsuit is a complete fiction and fabrication. None of the events claimed in the suit ever occurred."

John Travolta's statement notes that the masseur didn't disclose his name in the lawsuit - he sued as "John Doe" - further damaging his credibility.

John is confident he will get the case thrown out. Stay tuned.

Scouting Deals? Use These Apps

Screen Shot 2012-05-06 at 11.31.58 PMOh the "where do I find hot startups?" problem ? VCs have been grappling with this for ages, resorting to such avenues as rampant gossiping, reading TechCrunch, informally tapping into early stage investor networks for intros to later stage deals and apparently, according to PandoDaily's Sarah Lacy, setting up formal programs where entrepreneurs who are "network rich and cash poor" serve as deal scouts. Makes sense. Thus becoming the platform for startup discovery presents a huge opportunity for anyone who comes up with a grand solution: And, because which hot startup isn't mobile these days,?Apple itself is rumored to be trying to solve the problem with its own app discovery and promotion platform, aiming to go beyond its Featured section and expand into more intensive forms of app publicity. Its recent acquisition of Chomp harkens to this ambition and project, though as far as I can tell it still has a long way to go.
